We waited a long time Avatar: The Way of Water. And it looks like we’ll be watching it for a long time to come, too.
According to reports online, Avatar: water water, James Cameronthe first Avatar the sequel (and first directorial effort since 2009) will run “around three hours and 10 minutes.” The original Avatarwhich became the highest-grossing film in motion picture history, was only two hours and 42 minutes long.
In accordance with The Hollywood Reporter, The way of water running about half an hour longer than its predecessor, continues a recent trend for Hollywood blockbusters:
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, films have become longer, with many Hollywood event shoots lasting more than two hours and 30 minutes, which is considered long by traditional standards… This trend will continue for the rest of the year. December’s tentpole Babylon from Paramount and director Damien Chazelle is at least three hours long, THR insiders tell us. And Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will be released on November 11, is two hours and 41 minutes. Matt Reeves’ Batman, released earlier this year, ran for two hours and 55 minutes.
While the conventional wisdom about mainstream movies is that shorter is better—in part because it allows theaters to book more screenings per day and thus sell more tickets and make more money—longer runtimes aren’t exactly box office poison, as some may think . Cameron’s own Titanic became the biggest-grossing film in history for a period (the period being years before Cameron’s film Avatar) with a duration of 195 minutes. And the only film (temporarily) to shoot Avatarwas the crown of the world box office Avengers: Endgame in 2019, which was a whopping 181 minutes. So maybe audiences like long films more than they care to admit.
