Grenholm. . “The Long-Term Energy for All and Everywhere initiative uses the expertise of the Department, national laboratories and industry to create next-generation energy storage – making solar energy available when the sun is not shining and supporting wind energy when there is no wind.”

A shorter-term repository is currently being installed to support growing production and electrification of renewable energy sources. With historic investments from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, more renewable energy sources will be deployed in the grid, and electrification of buildings and vehicles will continue to grow. Longer storage technologies are needed as the country needs to increase access to and availability of renewable energy. Long-term energy storage, defined as systems that can store energy for more than 10 hours at a time, would support an inexpensive, reliable carbon-free electrical grid. Cheaper and more efficient storage will make it easier to extract and store clean energy for use when energy production is unavailable or below demand.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Health’s new Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, will work to address these challenges and achieve the cost target by investing approximately $ 505 million over four years in validating long-term energy storage and empowerment customers and communities. for more efficient network storage integration. DOE is implementing three energy saving demonstration programs.

The demo program will prepare a cohort of advanced technologies to demonstrate utilities that might not otherwise proceed given the potential risks of investing in technology, through a lab, measurement or on-campus demonstration. In particular, these field demonstrations are designed on a scale of 100 kW or less and have already been proven on a laboratory scale.

The demo projects will allow the use of first-of-its-kind utilities on a utility scale, mitigating risks during the final technical test before a wider deployment, the steepest part of the commercialization curve. Large, long-term storage demonstrations in this program should be able to provide at least 10 hours of rated power and undergo sufficient third-party testing / verification to justify the goal of achieving a target aligned storage cost of $ 0.05 / kWh.

The pilot grant program will address institutional barriers to technology adoption in the marketplace. Such barriers are easier to eliminate when technology has been installed, operated, eliminated and identified and proven to benefit users, communities or the energy system. Few organizations have the financial ability to invest in such a pilot. Pilot grants alleviate this barrier by allowing greater investment in storage from relevant entities that include government energy offices, tribal nations, higher education, utilities, and energy storage companies.

As part of a joint long-term energy storage initiative, the U.S. Department of Defense is also working with the U.S. Department of Defense to demonstrate long-term storage at government facilities.

The NPP Ministry’s Long Duration Storage Shot program, launched in July 2021, aims to achieve a higher energy storage cost of $ 0.05 / kWh, a 90% reduction from baseline costs by 2020 to 2030. g. This cost reduction will make the starting clean energy available for a long time. duration of energy storage – the most cost-effective choice for electricity consumers. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to consider a wide range of energy storage technologies, including electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, flexible generation, flexible buildings and power electronics, much more than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

In March, the Energy Accumulation Initiative for Social Justice of the Ministry of Economy selected 14 communities to receive technical assistance for the use of energy conservation as a means of increasing sustainability and long-term accessibility.

These programs will prioritize projects that use a secure internal supply chain and support the creation of paid jobs in unions. According to the Biden administration’s Justice40 initiative, this initiative supports the goal of getting 40% of the benefits of investing in the climate plane to disadvantaged communities.
