If you want to use a reliable VPN service for remote workers, NordLayer VPN is a great option. Learn how to install and use the client on the Ubuntu and Fedora 36 desktop.

NordLayer VPN (officially called NordVPN Teams) is a VPN-based network security solution that can serve virtually any business and allows administrators to manage connections from a remote web dashboard. But for the user, NordLayer is a VPN service with more than 30+ global locations that offers strong AES-256 encryption, a switch, threat blocking, hacking / root detection, and automatic connectivity.

As a NordLayer VPN administrator, you can control login types, security configurations and more.

Understand that although the NordLayerclient app is free, the service is not. You can subscribe to various tariff plans that start at $ 7 per user per month and go up to $ 9 per user per month. It should also be noted that NordLayer VPN is not a tool for consumers. Instead, this VPN solution is business-related and makes it much easier for companies to remotely manage the ability of employees to use VPN for their networks. So if you need to make sure your remote staff works with a secure network at home (or almost anywhere), NordLayer may be just what you need.

What I want to do is guide you through the process of installing a NordLayer VPN client on Linux. Although the application can be installed on almost any platform (Linux, macOS, Windows, Android and iOS), the steps to install and use it on Linux are not as simple as on other platforms.

With that said, let’s establish.

What you need

The only thing you get to install the client is a running instance of Linux and a user with sudo privileges. I will demonstrate the installation on both Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 and Fedora 36.

How to install NordLayer on the Ubuntu desktop

We will first run the installation on the Ubuntu desktop. Log in to your desktop, open a web browser to NordLayer download site and download the .deb file. Save this file to the ~ / Downloads directory.

Next, open a terminal window and enter the command:

sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/nordlayer*.deb

The above command does not actually install the NordLayer client, but the repository contains the necessary packages. After the installation is complete, update apt with:

sudo apt update

Finally, install NordLayer using:

sudo apt install nordlayer -y

After the installation is complete, add your user to the nordlayer group using:

sudo usermod -aG nordlayer $USER

Notify the system of changes using:

newgrp nordlayer

How to install NordLayer on Fedora 36

Installation on Fedora 36 is somewhat similar. Download the .rpm file from the Downloads page and save it to the ~ / Downloads file. Open a terminal window and install the repository using:

sudo rpm -i ~/Downloads/nordlayer*.rpm

Then install NordLayer using:

sudo dnf install nordlayer -y

Add your user to the nordlayer group with:

sudo usermod -aG nordlayer $USER

Notify the system of changes using:

newgrp nordlayer

How to use NordLayer

In Linux, everything is done through the command line. You can check the status of your NordLayer connection with:

nordlayer status

This command should report something like this:

Login: Not logged in
VPN: Not Connected
Current network: wired connection

If the administrator configures NordLayer for your company, they will create an organization. If you issue a command with the following command, you will first be prompted for the organization name:

nordlayer login

After entering the name of the organization you will be asked to choose the login method. The settings will depend on what your administrator has allowed. For example, your administrator has enabled email sign-in. To do this, you must enter the email address associated with your NordLayer account and then the password associated with your email address.

After successful authentication, your system will be connected, but you will need to select a gateway to use. To display a list of available gateways, issue the command:

nordlayer gateways

Let’s say, for example, you want to connect to a UK gateway. To do this, you must issue a command:

nordlayer connect uk

You are currently connected to the British NordLayer gateway and all your network data is encrypted.

If you want to disconnect from the gateway, enter the command:

nordlayer d

And that, my friends, is how you install and use the NordLayer VPN client on Linux.
