If you want a break from work or the endless news cycle, Google is here to give you an escape. The search giant has released a new Halloween themed doodle which opens up a snake-like game that you can play with friends or random players from around the world.

The object of the game is to collect as many wandering spirit flames as possible in two minutes and return them to the home base. At the end of time, the team with the most Spirit Flames wins. Here’s the catch: Enemies can intercept each other’s spirits, returning them to their home base. Ghosts that collect the most spirit flames also unlock special abilities such as increased speed and night vision.

You can host a game and invite up to seven friends to play with you via a special invite link, or choose a game with a random selection of players. Google says the team behind Doodle has built multiple systems to enable this multiplayer game, all running on Google’s cloud platform. The team used Open Match, an open-source matchmaking framework co-founded by Google Cloud and Unity.

Google often uses doodles to honor historical dates and people, but sometimes uses the feature to add some fun when it comes to holidays. The new multiplayer Doodle is a sequel to Google’s 2018 Great Ghoul Duel Doodle. The 2022 version includes new characters, game cards, special power-ups and more.
