The Google Pixel 7 has been on shelves for less than two months, but the tech leak factory rarely stops working, and today we’ve potentially got our first look at the 2023 Pixel 7a.

The successor to Google’s mid-range flagship line has been revealed for the first time in leaked images. It shows, unsurprisingly, a device that looks very similar to Pixel 6a.

Considering Google didn’t do much with the design Pixel 7 – compared to its predecessor – it makes sense that the A-series phone would follow suit.

According to images and specifications obtained by expert liquor Steve Hemmerstoffer OnLeaks and A smart prize (via XDA Developers), the dimensions of 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0 mm are almost identical, while the signature camera panel remains in play – the device stretches 10.1 mm along that strip.

The display, the panel, the selfie camera in the center and the small chin at the bottom of the device will also be familiar to Pixel 6a owners. What will be improved beyond the design remains to be seen. There is an opportunity to add Google Tensor G2 processorwhich debuted in the Pixel 7 range, while Google may also improve the cameras beyond the dual 12-megapixel rear cameras in the Pixel 6a.

While the display looks like it will be the same size, judging by the dimensions, Google may decide to fix one of the Pixel 6a’s shortcomings – the lack of a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate.

Faster charging would also be welcome with our Pixel 6a review showing the device maxes out at just 18W, which is significantly slower than its Android rivals. There’s also no wireless charging, which Google has until now reserved for its flagship phones.

Android 13 is sure to be on the way, and Google is promising five years of updates for its homegrown phones, which means some major improvements over time and fixing any security issues over the life of the phone.

We expect the Pixel 7a to appear at Google I/O in May 2023, if the previous form factor is fulfilled. That means probably another six months.
