iPhone 15 enters trial production

The iPhone 15 lineup has reportedly entered trial production.

In accordance with Daily economic newsApple’s next smartphone has begun “trial production of a new machine” at the company’s Chinese manufacturing partner, Foxconn.

This stage of the iPhone 15 manufacturing process is commonly known as New Product Introduction or NPI. This will precede the mass production phase later this year, ahead of the phone’s inevitable fall launch.

While this kind of NPI phase is common in iPhone production, the report notes that 2023 will be a bit different. That’s because production is split between China and India, and this year “the gap between the mass production time of the iPhone and mainland China and India will narrow.”

“In previous years, the mass production time of two seats was about six to nine months. Last year it was reduced to two months, and this year it will be reduced to a few weeks.”

This year’s lineup is expected to add a new ultra-premium iPhone to the party in the iPhone 15 Ultra. Reports suggest that this new model (and possibly the iPhone 15 Pro) will have a titanium frame like the Apple Watch Ultra, as well as solid-state buttons. This could indicate that Apple is ready to position premium phones as viable durable phone options.

It has also been suggested that the iPhone 15 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro will see the full benefits of faster USB-C charging speeds.

Elsewhere, it has been speculated that Apple’s new Dynamic Island notch could appear across the entire iPhone 15 lineup. The current lineup only features the feature iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
