Cupertino giant Apple has announced four new iPhone models, but this year there’s been a big line drawn between “Pro” and “non-Pro” models. And this is not only limited by the camera and display, but also by the processing power. Additionally, Apple ditched the “mini” model introduced with the iPhone 11 series and bought back the “Plus” variant.
Display: The Apple iPhone 14 continues to use the popular 6.1-inch design, but there is a new bigger brother, the iPhone 14 Plus, with a 6.7-inch screen. Both models feature an updated internal design for improved thermal performance, Super Retina XDR displays with OLED technology that supports 1,200 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and Dolby Vision. They also feature a durable Ceramic Shield front cover—exclusive to iPhone—and are protected from common spills and accidents with water and dust resistance.
A15 Bionic, a powerful 5-core GPU: Apple ditched the A16 Bionic chip for “non-professional” models and opted for the A15 Bionic with a 5-core GPU. The 6-core processor handles complex tasks smoothly and efficiently, and the 16-core Neural Engine is capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning for iOS 16 features and third-party apps.
Update the camera: Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus get a new 12MP primary camera with a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new TrueDepth front-facing camera, an ultra-wide camera to capture more scenes, and a photonic engine for a giant leap in low-light performance. The new main camera features a large ƒ/1.5 aperture and 1.9 micron pixels to improve photos and videos in all lighting scenarios for better detail and motion freezing, less noise, faster shutter speeds and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. There’s a new Action mode for smooth video that adjusts for significant shake, motion, and vibration, even when video is captured in the middle of action. The new TrueDepth front-facing camera with ƒ/1.9 aperture provides better photo and video performance in low-light conditions.
Fault detection: With this new feature, Apple is providing emergency assistance. The iPhone contains a new dual-core accelerometer capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs, and a new gyroscope with a wide dynamic range. The iPhone’s crash detection feature can now detect serious car accidents and automatically call emergency services if the user is passed out or unable to reach their iPhone. These capabilities were built on existing components, such as a barometer that can now detect changes in cabin pressure, GPS for additional input to change speed, and a microphone that can recognize loud sounds typical of severe car crashes.
Paired with the Apple Watch, the crash detection feature seamlessly leverages the unique power of both devices to force users to help effectively. If a major failure is detected, the emergency call interface will appear on the Apple Watch as it is likely to be closest to the user, while the call is made via the iPhone when it is in range for the best possible connection.
Emergency SOS via satellite: The iPhone 14 lineup also features Emergency SOS via Satellite, which combines custom components deeply integrated with software to allow antennas to connect directly to a satellite, allowing for messages to be exchanged with emergency services when they are out of cellular coverage or Wi-Fi. Satellites are low-bandwidth moving targets, and it can take several minutes for a message to travel through. Because every second counts, with Emergency SOS via satellite, the iPhone preloads several vital questions to assess the user’s situation and tells him where to point the phone to connect to the satellite. The initial questionnaire and follow-up messages are then forwarded to centers staffed by Apple-trained professionals who can call for help on the user’s behalf. However, this emergency SOS via satellite will be available to users in the US and Canada in November, and the service will be free for two years.
iOS 16: Powered by iOS 16, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will feature a reimagined lock screen along with new communication, sharing, and smart features that together change the way users use iPhone. The lock screen is more personal, beautiful and useful than ever, thanks to a layered effect that skillfully puts the objects of your photos in front of time, and newly designed widgets that offer information at a glance. With Messages, users can now edit or recall recently sent messages, and mark conversations as unread to return to later.
Prices: Both iPhones feature a rugged and sleek aerospace-grade aluminum design in five finishes – Northern, Blue, Star, Purple and (PRODUCT)RED – with storage options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The iPhone 14 will be available for Rs 79,900 from September 16, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available for Rs 89,900 from October 7.
