Former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has been elected Senate Speaker after members of Kenya’s Azmimio La Umoja One Alliance boycotted the exercise over alleged integrity issues among some candidates.
Mr Kingi won 46 of the 66 votes to become the third Senate speaker after Ekwe Ethur and Ken Lusaka.
Azimio’s speaker candidate, Kalonzo Musyoka, withdrew from the race at the last minute, leaving members of the Kenya Kwanzaa coalition to choose their candidate without much of a fight.
After his withdrawal, senators from Azimio La Umoja said the other candidates had integrity issues.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kaiwang said they decided not to get involved and to “sanitize the fraudulent process”.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna complained that senators received the candidates’ summaries late and therefore did not have time to vet the candidates.
Meru Senator Katuri Murungi was elected Deputy Speaker unopposed after Kilifi Senator Stuart Madzayo withdrew from the race.
